Martin Crick
Sports coach UK
Education and Training Manager (Coaching)

April 23 2008

Dear Martin,

Thank you for your recent emails in response to my question, “What provision, if any, had been made for non-BJA people to gain a UKCC”.

When I took our concerns to then Minister for Sport Richard Caborn MP, he told the House, October 26 2006, “We have ensured that sports coach UK, who are responsible for developing and implementing the UKCC, UK Sport and Sport England are aware of their (the campaign) various concerns. We will continue to work with these organisations to ensure that, where appropriate, these issues are addressed.”

Where appropriate?
Clearly sports coach UK did not consider it ‘appropriate’ that non-BJA people wishing to access a national award should be treated on equal terms as those in the BJA.

You say; “The qualification (UKCC) specification for the Judo level 1 states that candidates must hold a BJA grade 4th kyu or BJA recognised equivalent, for level 2 a BJA grade 1st kyu or BJA recognised equivalent.”

I asked you what “recognised equivalent” meant. You replied,  “The point with judo however is that they (BJA) are asking for a certain level of technical skill as a prerequisite, largely they argue on health and safety grounds, whereas I do not have to have played rugby league / cricket / football etc in order to attend a rugby league / cricket / football coaching course. So 'equivalent' here refers to the technical ability of the candidate. Therefore a candidate will have to demonstrate technical expertise equivalent to 4th kyu etc.”

Firstly Martin the BJAs fixing on “health and safety grounds” as an argument to necessitate the ‘competence testing’ of non-BJA members just doesn’t hold water.

A Cultural Exchange – With A Difference!

Ten members of a German Judo Club from Friedberg in Bavaria enjoyed two hours of Judo training on Good Friday with members of Trowbridge Zen Judo Club and visitors from Thatcham Zen Judo Club at the Martial Arts Leisure (UK) in Trowbridge on Good Friday.

Trowbridge Zen Judo and Thatcham Zen Judo Club

Christian Mayr of the Friedberg Club contacted Nick Bevan, the owner and manager of Martial Arts Leisure UK, as they were about to visit Chippenham on a twin town exchange visit and wished to train with another Judo Club in the area.

Mike Healy of Dilton Marsh who is a 4th Dan Black Belt in Zen Judo, and the Chief Instructor of the Trowbridge Zen Judo Club, brought many of his players together, along with members of the Thatcham Zen Judo Club, which is run by Mike’s eldest daughter, Caroline Gourlay 3rd Dan.

April 4 2008

Dear Mr Sutcliffe,

Since the judo UKCC has been endorsed, and your DCMS policy official for sports coaching Mr Burles was unable to give me any information on the promised provision of access to the qualification for non-BJA members, I wrote to sports coach UK.

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I asked sports coach UK what provision had been made for non-BJA people to gain the UKCC. Martin Crick, Coach Education Manager replied;

“The qualification specification for the Judo level 1 states that candidates must hold a BJA grade 4th kyu or BJA recognised equivalent, for level 2 a BJA grade 1st kyu or BJA recognised equivalent.”

I subsequently asked what they meant by, “BJA recognised equivalent” Martin replied;

WHY PEOPLE BEGIN TO LEARN MARTIAL ARTS

(Identifying students needs and expectations)

INTRODUCTION

There are many reasons why a person might decide to turn up at your dojo and have a go at the martial arts, and it is important that we try and identify these in order to establish exactly what the potential student is looking for, and whether or not your art is going to give it to them.

Zen Judo (Spring) Budo Course 2008 - Report
Training Courses and Events

Over 50 Instructors and students, including 30 Black Belts, from a wide variety of clubs, organisations and martial arts, attended this years Zen Judo (Spring) Budo course. The course was again held at Bognor Regis Zen Judo Club in West Sussex and those attending travelled from clubs in Nottingham, Northampton, Thatcham, Trowbridge, Eastbourne, Devon and Hampshire.

The Saturday turning out to be the most popular day with 50 attendees, this was probably due to the clash with "mothers day".

One of the highlights of the weekend was the presentation by Sensei John Goldman 7th Dan UBA to Shihan Gordon Lawson 6th Dan BZJFA, of a copy of the certificate awarded to Kenshiro Abbe by Emperor Hirohito at the Imperial Palace, Japan, on March 23rd 1945. (see separate news article - webmaster).

John Goldman 7th Dan and Kenshiro Abbe Sensei
General News and Announcements

For those of you who are interested in the history of Judo in the UK and in particular the Kyu-Shin-Do style of Judo, from which Zen Judo originated and which was brought to the UK by Sensei Kenshiro Abbe.

Its worth looking at the Devon Judo Centres website which has information on Sensei John Goldman 7th Dan and his ties with Sensei Abbe. The site contains photos of Sensei Abbe's house in Japan and also copies of certificates awarded to Sensei Abbe by Emperor Hirohito at the Imperial Palace, Japan, on March 23rd 1945 and records Abbe's importance as a Budo Master in Japan.
