Promotion beyond 3rd Dan is at the invitation of the Masters and any grading requirements will be at there discretion.
A black belt holding this rank would be required to demonstrate a high technical understanding of Zen Judo and the ability and willingness to pass this on to lower grades through teaching and helping to run clubs.
This is the original requirement for 3rd Dan as laid down by Shihan McCarthy. Please note that the BZJFA syllabus has been amended and now requires both the Nage-No-Kata and the Katame-No-Kata for the grading to 2nd Dan. And the Ju-No-Kata for grading to 3rd Dan.
