CONDOLENCES
The Zen Judo family is deeply saddened
by the death of Jennie McCarthy, Rick McCarthy's wife
and Peggie's
daughter-in-law. Jennie and Rick had run a Kyu Shin Do
Judo club in Portchester while the Zen Judo family was
still
in its formative days. Rick came along the Kyu Shin Do
Judo ranks with Mac, his father, who would later found
Zen
Judo and run the system out of Petersfield. Those of
us who know the McCarthy family personally are all very
sorry
with the family's loss and we send Peggie, Adrian and
Sue (and children), and Rick our sincerest and
deepest condolences. Our family has lost a dear member
and we shall all miss her very much...
CHATROOM
The Zen Judo family has a new way
to stay in touch. For those of us who want to spend more
time
catching up with each other and discussing out art, a
Forum/ Notice board was added to the
www.zenjudo.co.uk/
website. We can take advantage of this opportunity to
increase our interaction
and to discuss dojo-related issues or problems with each
other. Sometimes we can benefit from the wisdom
and experience of other Sensei.
GRADINGS/PROMOTIONS
We are proud to announce the results
of the most recent gradings and promotions at the Radcliffe
Zen
Judo club. The grading took place on the 9th of February,
being presided by Sensei Andrew M Millard
(6th Dan BZJFA). David Turner, Keith Harby, Amanda Lawson,
and David Robinson completed successfully their
testing and were promoted to 1st Dan. On behalf of the
entire Zen Judo family we would like to welcome the four
into our growing Yudanshakai. We are also happy to hear
that Roy and Jacqui Padgett were promoted to Green
belts and Richard Proud was promoted to Orange belt.
Sensei Gordon Lawson tells us that the club at Radcliffe
is
proud of these Judoka for their hard work and dedication,
for all the hours of countless practice, and also for
their
help in teaching others which is part of the requirement
for a Dan grade.
KANGEIKO
We hear from Sensei Vern Borgen that
the 2002 Kangeiko went really well. And they have a great
photo to
prove it! Check out the Zen energy from the folks out
in Minnesota! (Click

CLUB CLOSING AND RE-OPENING.
We sad to announce that Sensei Brian
Bagot's club, the Wareham Zen Judo Club, has had to close.
The Wareham club has served the Zen Judo family through
at least two decades and has formed a good
number of technical and competent Dan grades. The closing
is particularly felt here in America, since the
foundation of American Zen Judo was closely connected
with the Wareham Zen Judo club. We wish all of
its members the best and send our best wishes also to
its leader. Those who need more information on the
issue, feel free to e-mail Sensei Brian Bagot. But Sensei
Bagot also informs us that he has obtained permission
to
use his local village hall to start a new Zen Judo Club.
He is hoping to commence on 8th April on Mondays
between 5-7pm initially. The club will probably be called
the Keinton Zen Judo Club, situated at Keinton Mandeville
Village Hall in Somerset. Congratulations to Sensei Bagot
on his new club.
TRAINING
The Gentle Ways club in Fargo, North
Dakota will be sponsoring a clinic with Sensei Cunningham,
on March,
the 23rd at the North Dakota State University Bentson
Bunker Field house. The clinic will be divided into 2
sessions. The morning session (8:00 a.m. to 12 noon)
will cover the principles of judo and their relationship
to the techniques of the 3rd, 4th and 5th kyo of the
Gokyo no Waza - these techniques appear primarily in
the
brown and black belt syllabus of Kodokan Judo. Participants
should have 3 to 5 years of judo experience and
have good falling skills. In the afternoon session (1:00
p.m. to 5:00 p.m.) Sensei Cunningham will cover a wide
variety of judo techniques that will appeal to novice
and advanced students alike. The cost of this event is
$50
for both sessions and $40 for the afternoon session.
This will be a rare opportunity to train with Sensei
Cunningham,
who is the Technical Director of the United States Judo
Association.
Sensei Jana Seaborn of Fargo, North Dakota invites the
Zen Judo family to a Kata Clinic at the Fond du Lac
club in Wisconsin. The clinic will take place in the
last weekend in June (29 & 30). Clinicians will be
3 7th or 8th dans
from the Kodokan plus Sensei Eiko Shepard. Brett Wood-Taylor,
the Sensei of the Welcome Mat Judo club in Fond
du Lac has been a referee for many years and is a great
guy. He wants to make this a fun weekend as
well as educational and is planning a big barbeque and
party for Saturday night. The cost is not determined
yet
but will probably be about $70. For more information
e-mail Sensei Seaborn at fmymcajudo@yahoo.com.
