American Zen Judo is starting
an e-mail news service. It's called Wadokan News.
If you have any announcements to share with American
or British Zen Judo clubs, please e-mail them to
hcavalca@richmond.edu and we'll pass them along.
If you wish to include others in this service, just
send us their e-mail address and we'll include them
in our list.
WADOKAN NEWS September 1999
LET'S CELEBRATE ZEN JUDO'S SILVER
ANNIVERSARY!
As Sensei Gordon Lawson reminded me,
it's been 25 years that Zen Judo has been in existence.
So we would like to celebrate our silver anniversary
with at least two major events. We'll start the celebration
at the ASAGEIKO international training here in Richmond,
Virginia and continue next Spring with a special session
at Petersfield Community Centre (the Hombu dojo). We
would like to invite all Zen Judoka to both trainings.
We hope to bring together as many of Mac's students as
possible and to take time to reminisce and celebrate
his legacy to us. The Asageiko will take place on October
9-10 (Saturday and Sunday), and there is plenty of lodging
available at very reasonable rates. The Petersfield Community
Centre session will take place in May. We're planning
on having the session on Saturday, 27 May, 2000. We have
the centre booked from 11:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. on that date.
The session would start around 1 p.m. or so. It will
be a time again to celebrate Mac's gift to us and to
fully enjoy it!
THROW OF THE MONTH Te Hiza Sasae
This technique demonstrates the use of
your hand to block uke's forward progress in order to
execute the throw. This technique has two separate methods
of application, called respectively the "short" and "long"
methods. In the former it is your right shoulder which
provides the impetus to complete the throw, while in
the latter it is your subsequent step forward which does
this.
SHORT METHOD:
Turn in by the "right lead" method, your
right hand sliding down uke's body to block the right
knee at the front. Holding your partner's sleeve tightly,
turn your body to the left so that the leverage of your
right shoulder helps augment the technique.
LONG METHOD:
From the position where you have
turned in and blocked with your right hand, step forward
with your left foot. Your forward movement will pull
uke over your blocking hand to complete the throw. As
you progress through the belts, your block and step will
begin to occur simultaneously.
