American Zen Judo is starting
an e-mail news service. It's called Wadokan News.
If you have any announcements to share with American
or British Zen Judo clubs, please e-mail them to
hcavalca@richmond.edu and we'll pass them along.
If you wish to include others in this service, just
send us their e-mail address and we'll include them
in our list.
WADOKAN NEWS July 1999
This month we are concentrating on Judo
in the Internet...
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FELPHAM ZEN
JUDO WEBSITE FOR ITS THOROUGHNESS
John Robertson has been working really
hard to create a beautiful website for the Zen Judo Family.
Currently, I would venture to say it's the most complete
website we have available, with historical and technical
information about Zen Judo. Among other things, you will
find there a Zen Judo history, Judo rules, other possible
Zen Judo contacts, information on the Custodians and
links to other Judo pages. More importantly, the site
has a description of the entire Zen Judo syllabus, belt
by belt! Take some time this month and pay a visit: http://www.zenjudo.freeserve.co.uk.
THE AMERICAN ZEN JUDO HANDBOOK WILL
BE ON THE WEB
We are in the process of putting the
entire handbook on the web so that no matter where our
clubs are we can maintain the same standards and the
same source for our practice. We just got our own domain
(www.zenjudo.com), but we are still looking for an internet
provider. As soon as we get the provider we'll bring
our page up in that address. The page will have information
on American Zen Judo, the handbook, and the Zen Judo
Family in England.
THE MOST INCLUSIVE SOURCE OF JUDO
INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET
If you'd like to learn more about Judo's
history, philosophy and techniques, probably the best
site to use is the one sponsored by Neil Ohlenkamp, Sensei
of the Encino Club in California. Neil has been collecting
information about Judo for a long time. A 5th degree
black belt, he is an avid student of Judo. Check out
the information he's put together. The web address is:
http://www.rain.org/~ssa/judo.htm. Some of the things
that I've found valuable in his site were the animated
drawings of how to perform each technique (http://www.rain.org/~ssa/animate.htm),
the instructions for Nage no Kata (http://www.rain.org/~ssa/katanage.htm),
and the Judo jokes (http://coyote.rain.org/~ssa/humor9.htm).
WADOKAN HAPPY HOUR
Last month we started a new get together,
thanks to Chris Flinn's suggestion. We meet once a month,
after the regular workout for beer and coffee to plan
club events and to enjoy a Zen Judo related chat. This
month we're getting together after the workout on Wednesday,
July 14th. Pencil that into your calendars. We'll see
everybody there!
THROW OF THE MONTH
Tai Otoshi Here
are two versions of the throw: INITIAL: Step in as for
kubi nage, right arm around uke's neck, then extend your
right leg across the front of his right ankle as you
pull his sleeve across your chest with your left hand.
Turn your body to your left to ease uke round your hip
to complete the throw. ADVANCED: Step back and around
with your left foot in the "left lead entry" and extend
your right foot across the in front of uke's right ankle,
two steps only. Keep turning to your left as you wind
your right hand into his lapel, pulling his sleeve with
your left hand and bringing uke round with both hands
to complete the throw. (Bagot, Zen Judo: A Way of Life,
p. 30).
