TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
AT THE READING KENSHINDORYU JUDO CLUB IN THE UK
Sensei Jim Dart, chief instructor at the
Reading Kenshindoryu Judo Club invites the Zen Judo family
to take advantage of two special courses in his dojo:
On June 5-6, the RKJC is sponsoring a course with top
ranking Zen Judo Sensei in the UK: Shihan Andrew Millard,
Sensei Mike Healey, Sensei Gordon Lawson and Sensei Jim
Dart. The course will include the "Gonosen No Kata",
Kata of fundamental counters, a favorite of traditional
Judokas (the Kata was created by Shihan Kyuzo Mifune,
a direct student of Jigoro Kano).
On September 12-13 the RKJC will hold a weekend course
at Poole, in Dorset, with Shihan Andrew Millard; Sensei
Gordon
Lawson; plus Ross Mockeridge, the British National Combat
Sombo Wrestling Coach; Sensei Linc Martin, 8th Dan Shojukempo
Jujitsu; and Sensei Jim Dart. The course will include
the teaching of Judo and Jujitsu. All Zen Judoka are
most welcome on this course, which costs only £40 inclusive
of training AND trailer accommodation on a holiday park.
Bookings by 1st July please.
ASAGEIKO DATES ARE FINAL
Final arrangements for the annual
international Zen Judo clinic (Asageiko) are done. Please
mark your calendars: the Asageiko will take place on
October 9-10 (Saturday/Sunday), in the North Court Hall
of the University of Richmond, in Richmond, Virginia,
USA. We will have two full days of training. The clinic
fee is US$25. This
year we will also have belt testing (grading) available
for Zen Judoka who have the time-in-grade. The Asageiko
is also the time for the annual meeting of the American
Zen Judo Yudanshakai (the ruling body for American Zen
Judo). All Zen Judokas in the UK and in America are invited
to the training, but please let us know in advance (no
later than August 30) if you are coming.
We want to make sure everybody can find lodging and that
we'll have enough mat space to do multiple training with
Zen Judo students of diffent ranks (beginners, intermediate
and advanced).
BRIAN BAGOT TO LEAD AMERICAN ZEN JUDO
HOMECOMING 2000
Given the success of the first American
Zen Judo Homecoming this year, we are already planning
next year's event. Sensei Brian Bagot has gracefully
agreed to lead the American Zen Judo Homecoming 2000.
Sensei Bagot is the author of "ZenJudo: A Way of Life"
(Dojo Books, 1989) and an old friend of American Zen
Judo. The Homecoming date next year will be Sunday, April
30. As you know, the American Zen Judo Homecoming celebrates
Mac's birthday (April 29) as a way to honor the creation
of Zen Judo. All Zen Judoka are invited to the event.
Sensei Vern Borgen, who led the Homecoming this year
will also be present for the Homecoming 2000.
JUDO FORUM, FINALLY A MAGAZINE FOR
PRACTITIONERS OF TRADITIONAL JUDO
For those of us who practice of Judo
as an art, and not necessarily as a sport, there is finally
a great online magazine. The "Judo Forum" is dedicated
to the service of judo as a martial art, as a sport,
as recreation and as physical education. Its Editor,
Sensei Vern Borgen, is a practitioner of Zen Judo and
welcomes any contributions to the magazine from Zen Judokas
in America or the UK. If you would like to have your
dojo spotlighted, this would be a great place to do it.
I would say that Judo Forum is the only Judo magazine
available these days that takes seriously the learning
of the art in all its aspects -- technical, historical,
philosophical. Check out Sensei Cunningham's interviews,
for instance -- thorough, professional, and well informed.

BELT TESTING
We're proud to announce that Frank Curran
III and Jennifer Fisher are testing for their Nykkyu
rank at the Wadokan Dojo. Grading should be done by June,
02. They'll join Chris Flinn and Jerome Legions as assistant
Sensei at the American hombu dojo. Congratulations to
both.
THROW OF THE MONTH
O Soto Otoshi This is not a widely practice
throw, but it makes a very useful lead up towards o soto
gari which makes its appearance in the next syllabus.
This technique also makes an excellent counter to certain
rear throws when timed correctly. It must be remembered
that the point of contact giving impetus to the technique
is the inside of the right thigh against uke's right
thigh. Step forwards with your left foot outside uke's
right foot, as in ashi gake. Pass your right leg around
the rear of your partner's right leg and deep between
them, driving your foot downwards as you straigthen your
knee, simultaneously pushing backwards and down with
your right arm whilst pulling uke towards ou with your
left hand. The contact between your thighs will sweep
your partner's leg forwards and s/he will land across
our feet. One of the main faults demonstrated by students
is a lack of impetus from the thigh contact, their technique
being virtually indistinguishable from ashi gake. Uke
should land across you rather than straight backwards, and
the final drive of your right foot should precipitate
the throw. (Bagot, Zen Judo: A Way of Life, pp. 47-48).
