AMERICAN ZEN JUDO FIRST
HOMECOMING A BIG SUCCESS!
To celebrate Mac's birthday (April 29), American Zen Judo organized its first homecoming workout. On May 2nd, members from the three American clubs (Wadokan, Charlottesville and Washington D.C.) spent an afternoon together training. This was a first for the American clubs. Three of the four American Zen Judo Yudansha were present: Keo (Yoda) Cavalcanti, Ed (Tigger) Stockwell and John McIntyre. Stephanie Bunte, the other black belt from Tennessee was unable to attend this time (she is looking forward to the Asageiko, though).
Vern Borgen Sensei (5th Dan) from the Gentle Ways Judo Association in Fargo, North Dakota, conducted a Kata clinic and the regular workout for us. Vern is a dear
friend and fellow traveler of American Zen Judo. The
clinic highlighted Nage no Kata techniques for Zen Judokas
blue belt and up. Vern dazzled us with some new Zen ways
to handle very difficult techniques (like Tsuri Komi Goshi, or Harai Goshi and so on). Then, from 3 to 5:30p.m. the three clubs worked out together under the instruction of two teams: Senseis Keo Cavalcanti and John McIntyre worked out with white and yellow belts, and Senseis Vern Borgen and Ed Stockwell worked out with orange belts and up.
The event ended with a nice dinner at Full Kee (the most authentic Chinese restaurant in town). Our thanks to the folks from the Charlottesville and Washington D.C. clubs for making the trip to Richmond!
SCHEDULE CHANGE IN WADOKAN WEEKLY WORKOUTS
Starting this week (May 10), workouts at the Wadokan (Hombu dojo for American Zen Judo) will no longer be on Sundays (3-6 p.m.) and Wednesdays (8-10p.m.). We are changing the schedule to Monday and Wednesdays night (7-9:30 p.m.). Please take notice and share the information with other club members.
BELT TESTING
We're proud to announce that Chris Françoise and Russ Stone Jr. tested successfully for their Yellow Belt at the Hombu Dojo (Wadokan) last night, May 12. They are the newest members of the Zen Judo family. Congratulations to both!
ASAGEIKO DATES!
Our annual international Zen Judo clinic (Asageiko) is scheduled already! Please mark your
calendars: Asageiko will take place on October 9-10 (Saturday/Sunday). It will be hosted in the North Court Hall of the University of Richmond. We will have two days of Zen Judo training with top ranking Zen Judo Senseis instructing!
This year we will also make available the opportunity for belt testing for those students who have the time-in-grade. And we'll also have the annual meeting of the American Zen Judo Yudanshakai (the ruling body for American Zen Judo). All Zen Judokas are invited to the event, but please let us know in advance (no later than August 30) if you are coming. We want to make sure everybody can find lodging and that we'll have enough mat space to do multiple training with Zen Judo students of diffent ranks (beginners, intermediate and advanced).
