UK Coaching Certificate Evolution
sports coach UK, working with Sport England and SkillsActive, has started work to scope the approach, content and timelines for a review of the UK Coaching Certificate in line with the Sector Qualifications Strategy (Coaching).

The Sector Qualifications Strategy (Coaching) provides each sport with the opportunity to review the technical content, learning approach and materials, assessment approach and workforce requirements for its programmes. In the same way it also provides an opportunity to review a number of aspects of the UK Coaching Certificate process, building on the great strides forward the UK Coaching Certificate has already made in improving coach-education standards.
The UK Coaching Certificate provides a clear, external indication of the quality of coach education within sport. The coach-education programmes of 24 sports are currently endorsed by the UK Coaching Certificate, some with multiple disciplines within the sport. The need for such a process evolved more than seven years ago, to address inconsistencies in standards and the lack of a recognisable professional framework.
There is widespread agreement as to the benefits that UK Coaching Certificate endorsement has brought to the quality of coach education in the UK. Inevitably, however, sports have identified a number of issues which have arisen with its implementation, and these need to be addressed.
A further announcement on the Review will be made as soon as further information is available

Registration and Licensing: An Update
sports coach UK is to set up a task-and-finish group to drive forward developments around the regulation of sports coaching. This work is scheduled to be completed by March 2010. Further updates on this area are expected in the near future.

Sports Coaching Industry Data Collection
sports coach UK has produced recommendations and guidance on data collection in the coaching industry.
The recommendations for the Data Field Paper currently encompass three parts and provide:
• An agenda for comprehensive and consistent data collection (Part A)
• Rationale and Guidance paper to support the minimum standards recommendations (Part B)
• Recommendations for minimum standards of data collection (Part C)
The Rationale and Guidance paper (Part B) provides a summary of the background, development approach and guidance for the Data Field: Minimum recommendation paper (Part C). Additional background information is available within the support documents (Parts D to G).
The Data Field: Minimum recommendations paper (Part C) provides an outline of the specific set of data fields that organisations engaged in the management of sports coaches are encouraged to collect to enable their understanding of their workforce.
Both papers are based on the Data Field Paper: the Full list (Part A), which is the central source document that provides guidance on data fields appropriate for collection across the coach recruitment, induction, development and deployment process of coach management. The three papers aim to set the agenda for coach data collection enabling the adoption of a coordinated approach using common data fields.
This work builds on previous research as well as consultation with key partners on the position of data collection within coaching industry. It looks to enhance and extend best practice, raising the bar of the minimum set of data fields and providing standardisation of data collection within the sports industry. It is a key step in the achievement of the vision of the UK Coaching Framework and the progression of sports coaching as a professionally regulated vocation.
Part A is visionary in its recommendations looking to the needs of the coaching system in 2016 and beyond. (Part C) is designed to enable partners to take the first steps in the collection of data and to establish a common minimum set of data fields for coaching. The content of Part C will be extended in the future to reflect the future capacity for data collection.
The Data field papers Guidance and Rationale (Part B) and Minimum Recommendations (Part C) are available to view on the sports coach UK website. Additional support documents (Parts D to G) provide additional background to the Guidance and Rationale paper and are available for information on the website.
